Tuesday 25th- Back to the projects, the dump site and the BIG shop….

Tuesday 25th

Jubilee
After spending a whole weekend away from all of the children at Jubilee, we were all really looking forward to being back at the school. We were greeted by the welcome song and then got to work on our teaching and building. Chloe, Emily and Georgia taught the middle class about the different types of weather and even got the children to sing a few songs, while the boys and Pinno started to create a veranda outside the classrooms. We got picked up at 3 o’clock and taken straight to The Walk from which we walked to the dump. I don’t think any of us expected how awful the conditions would be with children running throughout the rubbish and broken glass. After exploring the site and buying homemade souvenirs, we made our way to the supermarket to start our BIG shop. We asked the head teacher for a wish list which we then bought along with lots of other surprises for the school. After spending nearly an hour packing the van, we made our way back to the hotel, excited to give over all of our donations tomorrow.



Ronaken

After spending an amazing weekend away at The Masai Mara, the whole group were really excited to get back to Ronaken for the final few days. We started the day off by getting the children involved with painting, creating a rainbow using their hands, for the school to hang on the wall in their staff room. We also created our own painting, by making flowers using our hands and painting the Lutterworth College logo so the children will always remember us. We then all split into small groups and taught various lessons in the older student’s classrooms, and spoke to the teachers about the different essential items that they would benefit from having more of at the school. When we got picked up from the school, we went straight to the dump site. Nothing could have prepared us for what we saw when we were walking round, and the conditions that people were living in shocked us all. After having an eye-opening experience at the dumpsite, we visited the supermarket to do a big shop for the Ronaken. We bought essential materials for the school, such as food, cooking and building equipment and school books for the children. We also used our own money to buy items for care packages that we each put together for the students and their families. These consisted of food, hygiene products etc. -

                               

The Walk
While the safari was an amazing experience, everyone was eager to return to the projects and carry on our work. We had missed the children so much and they were so excited to see us, as were we. We spent part of the day continuing to finish paint all of the classrooms downstairs and the rest of the day with the kids. We had lessons where we had the children make themselves out of pipe cleaners and stickers, a lot of them ended up being made into glasses or ‘goggles’ as the children called them. Whilst the children were filled with enthusiasm, from the ‘goggles’ we had given them, the team thought that this would be a perfect opportunity for a sport lesson. The lesson had many different activities from relays to flipping cones. After lunch Ollie and Sam decided to do an English lesson with class two, which meant the students had to write a story, which would contain pictures and descriptive sentences, which explained what was happening at every stage of the story.

                            

After the eventful day at the project, all the three projects met after school at The Walk Centre to visit the Dumpsite. The walk to the dumpsite was hard-hitting enough as the streets suddenly changed to slums. As we entered the dumpsite everyone’s breath was taken away by the sheer scale of the dumpsite as we stood on a hill of rubbish looking across the many fields taken up by the waste. We could physically see the gases being given off from the waste from the heat of the sun. As we continued we visited the women selling small items made from the objects found at the site. Some of the items included: Jewellery and Shopping bags.
                  



To finish off the day all the projects visited the shopping centre to buy some more items for the school as well as the students individually buying some few items to give to one student of their choice from the projects.
